Class Overview
Students work on a variety of activities each day in reading class. Students rotate with their groups. Some days they may be listening to their story or reading with a partner. Other times they are working independently on workbook pages or a computer activity. Students also have guided reading practice, vocabulary review and phonics instruction with Mrs. Bennett. Students use the Scott Foresman series of reading books as well as SRA and various other sources during class.
Homework
On Monday through Thursday nights, students should read for 20 minutes and fill out their reading log. Students should have a silent reading book with them at all times.
SRC
Just a reminder, students should have an SRC book with them at all times. Remember, the class with the most points at the end of the quarter gets a free homework night!! The 2007-2008 school year was a record setting year for SRC points. Let's work to make this year even better by breaking our own record!
Book Club
Once a month, students will have an opportunity to share and discuss their books with their classmates. This activity is intended to be an enjoyable way to find out about great books.
SRA
We are so pleased to be using a brand new SRA kit complete with brand new stories and lessons. Students work on SRA every Tuesday.
What Can Parents Do?
The best thing a parent can do to help their child is to enforce the 20 minutes of reading homework each night. It is not helpful for a parent to sign off on reading that was not done. Students should always have a quiet place to read. I also encourage all parents and students to explore your local library, especially for audio books. Audio books, accompanied by the book itself, are excellent tools for readers provided that students follow along in the book while they are listening. I also encourage all parents to read to their children regardless of age. Finally, if your child is struggling with a book, becoming frustrated or is showing a general lack of enthusiasm for the book they are reading, it may be time to find a different book. Children will have many years of being told what to read in school. For the time being, I encourage children to develop their love of reading by selecting books that they enjoy.
